Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting moments of the entire planning process — but knowing when to start can feel overwhelming. Between designer lead times, alterations, and styling your full bridal look, there’s a lot that goes into saying “yes” to the dress.
To make the process effortless, we created The Ultimate Wedding Dress Timeline to help you feel prepared, confident, and completely stress-free from the moment you book your appointment to the moment you walk down the aisle.
12–14 Months Before the Wedding: Start the Inspiration Phase
This is the perfect time to:
Explore silhouettes, fabrics, and designers you’re drawn to
Create a Pinterest board or save inspiration on Instagram
Consider your venue and season—they shape your overall bridal vision
Pro tip: Bring your inspiration photos to your appointment so your stylist can help you find gowns with the same vibe.
9–12 Months Before: Book Your Bridal Appointment
Most brides say “yes” during this window—and for good reason.Since the majority of bridal gowns are made-to-order, designers typically require:
6–8 months for production
Additional time for shipping and quality checks
This is why starting early ensures you have every option available, from minimalist silk gowns to couture ballgowns and everything in between.
If you fall in love, say yes! Designers update collections seasonally, and waiting can mean missing the gown that feels like “you.”
6–8 Months Before: Accessories & Styling
Once your gown is ordered, it’s time to curate the full look. During this stage, brides typically select:
Veils or capes
Jewelry and hairpieces
Shoes (important for your first fitting!)
This is also a great time to decide if you want any customizations, such as straps, sleeves, or a matching accessory to elevate your bridal moment.
2–3 Months Before: First Alterations Appointment
Your gown has arrived—yay! Now it’s time to perfect the fit.
At your first alteration appointment, your seamstress will:
Pin hem, bodice, and sides
Adjust straps or neckline
Ensure the gown supports your movement
Bring your wedding shoes and any undergarments you’ll be wearing on the big day.
4–6 Weeks Before: Second Alterations Appointment
This is where everything comes together.Your seamstress will finalize the tailoring and perfect all remaining details. Most brides only need 2–3 fittings — but always follow your seamstress’s guidance.
1–2 Weeks Before: Final Fitting & Pick-Up
At your final fitting, you’ll try on your gown with accessories to ensure the full look feels flawless. Your gown will be steamed, prepared, and carefully packed for pick-up.
Take a moment to soak it in — this is your real “I’m getting married!” moment.
